Endocrinology is the branch of medicine concerned with the hormone producing glandular system. This includes pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, gonads (sex glands) and the pancreas.

An Endocrinologist is a specialist in internal medicine, who further specialized in endocrinology and metabolism.

Endocrinologists also treat metabolic disorders and certain disturbances of body chemistry. Examples of metabolic problems include: high blood fats, including cholesterol and triglycerides, abnormal metabolism of sugar resulting in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (diabetes mellitus), abnormal metabolism of uric acid resulting in gout and kidney stones, osteoporosis and numerous others. Also, hormones control the metabolism of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, including fat, carbohydrates and protein.
