Endocrinology
is the branch of medicine concerned with the hormone producing glandular
system. This includes pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals,
gonads (sex glands) and the pancreas.
An Endocrinologist
is a specialist in internal medicine, who further specialized in endocrinology
and metabolism.
Endocrinologists
also treat metabolic disorders and certain disturbances of body chemistry.
Examples of metabolic problems include: high blood fats, including cholesterol
and triglycerides, abnormal metabolism of sugar resulting in hypoglycemia
(low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (diabetes mellitus), abnormal metabolism
of uric acid resulting in gout and kidney stones, osteoporosis and numerous
others. Also, hormones control the metabolism of vitamins, minerals and
other nutrients, including fat, carbohydrates and protein.
