There
are generally two types of Diabetes Mellitus. Type 1 diabetes occurs
when the body makes little or no insulin. People who have type 1
diabetes are dependent upon daily injections of insulin.
Type
2 diabetes occurs when the body makes insulin but can't use it well.
People who have type 2 diabetes are controlled with diet alone or
in combination with oral medications and/or insulin.
Both
types of diabetes are serious and can cause long term health problems.
There are five major tools used to control diabetes: education,
meal planning, physical activity, diabetes medicine and working
close with doctors to monitor diabetic control and complications.

Are
you aware people who have diabetes are
at an increased risk for heart disease?
Just
as the nerves to your hands and feet can lose function so can the
nerves to your heart. When the nerves to your heart are injured,
you may lose the ability to sense pain. Pain tells you to see your
doctor. Without pain, your heart disease may become worse or sometimes
even fatal.
There
is a simple, 10-minute test that causes you no discomfort. This
test can tell your doctor how well the nerves to your heart are
functioning. The test is known as NDX (neuropathy diagnosis) which
checks for autonomic neuropathy of the heart.
